In order to be able to leave a wind turbine quickly in an emergency, European standards and occupational health and safety laws stipulate a second escape route. Rescue equipment stored on the turbine is often used for such cases. SKYLOTEC has now developed another optimally suited solution. With the “Deus One”, the globally active brand for protective equipment presents an innovation that enables fully automatic abseiling – and completes its range in the field of rescue and evacuation systems.

For emergencies, rescue equipment stored directly in the nacelle has been standard for years. As a rule, two people can abseil down at the same time, actively or passively, inside or outside the tower. The “Milan” rescue device from SKYLOTEC has established itself as the standard device in recent years. In addition, the demand for lightweight, automatic and pure evacuation devices for use by one person has increased, which the user can always carry directly with him in order to be optimally prepared for any situation.

In Germany, the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) has taken up the extension of evacuation options by a fully automatic individual rescue device. In its revised Rule 112-199, the DGUV recommends: “Self-acting descending devices (Automated controlled systems) should be used for evacuations.”

After an intensive development process, SKYLOTEC has now brought an additional automatic product to market maturity that enables users to evacuate as simply and thus as quickly as possible in any emergency situation.

Self-evacuation: fully automated, intuitive and fast

The SKYLOTEC “Deus One” is the world’s first personal, fully automated evacuation device that users can carry directly with them as a supplement to personal protective equipment against falls from a height. While manual devices for self-evacuation require a mechanism to be operated during the abseil process, “Deus One” offers a decisive advantage: maximum stress reduction in an emergency by eliminating the need for active steering during the descent. Safe evacuation remains 100 per cent assured even in the case of unconsciousness, hand injuries or very little experience in handling abseiling equipment. The more intuitively the evacuation can be completed, the faster and safer the way out of the dangerous situation.

“Deus One“ can be carried by users or stored in strategical areas, thus immediately ready for use in an emergency. The carabiner at the rope end should be connected to the closest safe evacuation point, and the carabiner of the device directly to the chest D-Ring of the user’s harness. The abseil descent speed is kept under 2m/s.

Ready to use – for heights up to 200 meters

To ensure the descending speed, the rope and “Deus One” are assembled for optimal flow in specially designed compact bags. “Deus One” can be used at heights up to 200 meters and is available in different rope lengths. The hybrid rope has a diameter of only 5.9 mm, which reduces the wind resistence attack area of the rope to a minimum and allows for a very small pack size. It is heat resistant up to 450°C / 842°F. The 200m version is light and easy to carry, with a total weight of less than 8kg/17.5Lbs.

The bag, which is available in three different sizes, can be carried over the shoulder or attached to the material loops of a harness. This way it does not interfere during ascends on a climbing ladder, or during construction. Alternatively, the bag can also be placed within reach to have the equipment ready to hand as quickly as possible in case of an emergency.

“Deus One” is certified according to EN 341:2011/1D and ANSI Z359.4. The device is suitable for a user weight between 60 and 140 Kg / 130 and 310 Lbs. Furthermore, no product-specific user training is mandatory for the “Deus One”. Thanks to SKYLOTEC SEALPAC technology, the Sealed units (above 20m/65’) have a maximum lifespan of 15 years.

Main area of application are the wind industry, high-rack storage, construction, cranes, fire brigades or shipping.

Product performance and customer service

Employers have the obligation to develop, provide and train their employees on rescue concepts. Many companies have now developed an awareness – and rely on the help of specialists in the search for suitable solutions. SKYLOTEC has long been more than just an innovative product manufacturer. The German family-owned company provides support in the preparation of risk assessments with a special focus on fall protection as well as in the development of rescue and global training concepts.

Accidents in the workplace can happen at any time. While the consequences and outcomes of these incidents are fairly straightforward to see, establishing who is liable for accidents can be a little more challenging.
