New Regulations on PPE

New regulations released and came into force on 22nd of June

New regulations on the design, design and production of personal protective equipment (PVU) were laid down by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the Justice and Emergency Department on 22 June 2018 and came into force on the same day.

The new regulation implements the EU Regulation EU 2016/425 in Norway and replaces the Regulation of 19 August 1994 No. 819 on the Design, Design and Production of Personal Protective Equipment (PVU).

The regulations stipulate requirements for the design and production of personal protective equipment that will be made available on the market. The purpose is to ensure protection of the user's health and safety and to establish rules for free movement of personal protective equipment in the EEA area. The regulations do not therefore apply to the use of personal protective equipment.

The regulations are administered by the Norwegian Labor Inspection Authority, the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway and the Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning.

The new regulations have the following transitional provisions:

  • Personal protective equipment covered by and complying with the regulations of 19 August 1994 No. 819 on the Design, Design and Production of Personal Protective Equipment (PVU), which are put into circulation before 21 April 2019, may still be made available on the market.
  • EC type-examination certificates and decision-making approvals of 19 August 1994 No. 819 on the Design, Design and Production of Personal Protective Equipment (PVU) shall be valid until 21 April 2023, unless they expire before that date.
