Dearest readers,
In 2002, two men came together with a singular idea – to create a magazine for the health and safety sector that would offer expert, unbiased guidance on keeping workers safe on the job. Back then, safety was growing as an industry in both awareness and technological innovation, and as that technology and industry rapidly evolved, so did the risks to workers. And HSI was there every step of the way – for every regulation change and technological breakthrough, and even recently through a global pandemic!
Twenty years on, Health & Safety International is a credit to its publishers as Europe’s largest, audited health and safety magazine. Let’s take a look at how we got here:
2002
The Bay Publishing office opens in Weymouth, overlooking the bustling high street. HSI is born, ran initially by a two-man band, “the boys” a.k.a, our founding publishers Nigel Fellows and Nick Limm.
Issue no. 1 publishes in October.

2003
HSI exhibits at its first international trade fair, A+A 2003 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
This is our very first Show Guide edition.

2004
HSI announces it’s adding an extra feature, upping the total to six expert articles per issue.
The first iteration of HSI launches, with a shoutout in the first ExpoProtection Show Guide edition.

2005
HSI’s two-man band quickly goes from two, to three, to four! Our current Editor-in-Chief, Jenny, joins the Bay team as Editor.
With the rise in climate and environmental awareness, Bay Publishing launch a new magazine for the environmental monitoring sector, AWE International.

2006
HSI introduce a Reader Reply Card service to allow readers to enquire about products and services featured in the magazine. We begin to hear from some of our lovely readers for the first time.
Those previous six expert articles are now a whopping seven – what a treat!

2007
HSI’s contents pages are now also printed in French and German to accommodate our European readership.

2008
The first of HSI’s FORUMS is published. Throughout the year HSI focus and report on specific areas of PPE from the viewpoint of the people who know it best, the manufacturers.
Bay Publishing continues to grow, welcoming a dedicated Circulations and Subscriptions Manager to manage a rapidly growing readership.
Our sister publication, HSME, launches to cater to the growing safety sector in the Middle East and Africa.

2009
HSI gets a redesign! Our Editor-in-Chief Jenny curated this sleek, modern look to contend with new publication, HSME.

We became Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) membership approved – a true testament to the quality of HSI’s circulation.
Bay Publishing launch OSE Directory – the only global, multi-language online directory for PPE and environmental monitoring and analysis equipment.
2010
Another sister publication, OSA, launches thus expanding our reach to Asia.
Bay Publishing takes on a Deputy Editor to aid Jenny across what are now four magazines.
Our quarterly print, with the occasional extra show guide edition, is now bumped up to five issues a year with the introduction of a permanent September issue.

2011
Bay Publishing continues to grow to new heights as we launch an entire new magazine, AMH, looking at medical hygiene in the Middle East.
The HSI team alone is now seven strong!

2012
Following the success of AMH, Bay Publishing launch its sister publication, EMH, catering to medical hygiene in Europe. Both these beautiful magazines are styled by none other than Jenny.
Our Editor, Kimberley, joins us in the July issue as an Editorial Assistant. And, our very own Jenny becomes the Editor-in-Chief as we know her today.
HSI celebrates 10 years in print with a shiny, gold Anniversary Edition!

2013
HSI publish our very first Buyer’s Guide edition. Soon becoming an annual feature, here we ask manufacturers and distributers of PPE to highlight some of the important elements that every procurement manager should consider.
We celebrate our 50th issue – check out this fantastic cover design!

2014
Our Sales Manager Rebecca joins the HSI team in this issue as Advertising Sales.

2015
Kimberley becomes our fully-fledged Editor in the New Year.

2016
HSI publish the largest ever November issue at a staggering 126 pages!

2017
We flash back to Brexit and the start of Article 50 which makes for a timely theme in our articles assessing changes to the market throughout the year.
HSI publish a behemoth show guide edition for A+A 2017 with eight expert articles, plus all the other usual great editorial, clocking in at a chunky 196 pages!

2018
Our Editor Kimberley takes a casual trip to the Siberian tundra to give us this beautiful Editor’s Page in an issue that she aptly dubs ‘Feb-brrr-uary’.
It seems Kimberly brings the tundra frost with her as the UK is soon hit with ‘The Beast from the East’! It even makes it into our inaugural SAWO show guide with this beautiful, show-themed cover.

2019
Becca joins us in this issue in Advertising Sales, completing our advertising power-duo, ‘The Rebeccas’.
In May, our Digital Marketing Manager Jo joins us, and our digital services go from strength to strength.

2020
A pandemic strikes!
In a whirlwind year for HSI, Covid-19 puts PPE in the spotlight and HSI gains further traction as the whole world’s focus shifts to infection control and facemasks. Bay Publishing goes to remote working as of March, in the first UK lockdown.
Shipping and imports are almost brought to a standstill as the effects of the pandemic are felt the world over. HSI is on the scene with all the latest guidance for employers and never misses an issue or even so much as a deadline.

Rebecca welcomes the latest addition to Team HSI, Baby Avant!
Kimberely gets married not long after, and in a lockdown no less.
We return to the office, but only briefly, as another lockdown hits in late December.
2021
Our very own Freedom Day comes at last, and by April we’re back in the office, and better than ever.
Shazeda joins us as our new Circulations and Subscriptions Manager, followed closely by Sophie, our Digital Marketing Assistant – all in the month of May.
Lo and behold, in June I also take my place beside soon-to-be-mummy Kimberley as Editor.
Team HSI grows by one more little head as Baby Montellier is born in July!

2022
With Kimberely very much enjoying her time with baby, I introduce the first issue of the year.

And that’s us all caught up. Just kidding! It would be wholly cruel not to show you a glimpse of our special 20th Anniversary edition in the very article promoting it.
So without further ado…

Thank you to all of our advertisers, authors and avid readers for all your unwavering support these last 20 years. We’ve been through a lot together, and have come out all the stronger.
Here’s to another prosperous twenty years!
Stay safe, and take care,
Ana and the HSI Team
