BP awards $730 million of drilling contracts for Oman’s Khazzan tight gas project.
Along with shale gas and coal seam gas, tight gas is one of the ‘unconventional’ gases, termed so by its geological characteristics. Unconventional gases are trapped in rock with both low porosity and permeability, that is, rocks that do not easily permit the flow of oil and gas. First discovered in the 1990s, central Oman boasts a number of tight gas reservoirs, including the Khazzan and Makarem gas fields. The Khazzan project will involve drilling approximately 300 wells over 15 years, with the first gas targeted for late 2017. The project represents the first phase in the development of one of the Middle East region’s largest unconventional tight gas accumulations, which has the potential to be a major new source of gas supply for Oman. It is hoped that the project will generate around one billion cubic feet of gas per day, which would increase Oman’s daily domestic gas supply by around a third.
