Sellafield Ltd has won eight awards in the prestigious RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2015.
The company has recently recorded one of its best ever safety performances and these awards further demonstrate the commitment of the company and its employees to continually raise the bar when it comes to safe working.
Pete Oldfield, Head of Safety for the company, said: “It makes me very proud to be able to say that despite being one of the most complex nuclear sites in the world, we are also one of the safest, and that is not by chance.
“As one of the largest industrial sites in Europe with some very unique challenges, our attention to detail and relentless focus on delivering our mission safely means that we have an excellent safety record.
“To have this recognised publicly through the attainment of eight RoSPA awards is a fantastic achievement. I am proud of our employees and our supply chain’s continuing efforts towards improving safety, and want to thank them for delivering safe operations.
“We are never satisfied or complacent with regards to safety and we will build on these successes, continue to look at where we can improve, and work to the highest standards focusing on maintaining safe, secure site stewardship.”
The eight awards, five gold and three silver, will be presented during a ceremony in London on 16 June.
As the UK’s family safety charity, RoSPA’s mission to save lives and reduce injuries covers all ages and stages of life. In support of this mission, the RoSPA Awards, which date back 59 years, recognise commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention at work.
Through the scheme, which is non-competitive and open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas, judges consider entrants’ overarching occupational health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.
David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, said: “The RoSPA awards encourage improvement in occupational health and safety management. Organisations that gain recognition for their health and safety management systems, such as Sellafield Ltd, contribute to raising standards overall and we congratulate them.”
