Visible Progress
Light, Health and Alertness
Medical and biological research of the last 25 years has shown that lighting has, apart from a visual effect, also a non-visual biological effect on the human body. With the detection in 2002 of a novel photoreceptor cell in the eye, the biological effects that light has on human beings can be better understood. A large number of research projects that compare the effects on health and alertness as a result of people working under different lighting conditions have been carried out. We demonstrate that it can be beneficial, both from a wellbeing and productivity point of view, to have dynamic lighting in the work situation, in which both the level and the colour of the lighting vary in the course of the day.
Lighting the Way
Five years ago the lighting industry was revolutionised by the launch of the world’s first LED battery-powered portable floodlight. It massively reduced noise, fumes and tripping hazards on construction sites.
Task Lighting in Hazardous Areas
With so many different types of light source available to us today, we tend to forget that for many years people who worked in coal mines had to use candles, using a naked flame with the potential for ignition and explosion if there was a leak of methane. At that time, one of the most important jobs in the mine was that of “fireman”. His purpose in life was not to put out fires, as we might think today, but to actually ignite small fires so that any methane which collected in the roof of the mine was burnt off before it had a chance to ignite. He passed through the mine workings with a lighted taper on the end of a long pole, deliberately inserting the flame into any pockets in the roof where the methane (at about half the density of air) would collect. Rumour has it that he was either the best paid man in the mine or, using a modern phrase, a “prisoner on day release”.

Portable Safety Lighting
Portable safety lighting for use in explosive atmospheres has undergone many changes in recent years. Design standards have been subject to regular review and update, the ATEX Directives have been introduced; combined, these have brought about more onerous design and manufacturing requirements and greater standards of safety. Technology is moving at a pace, the development of battery, electronic control and LED technology offering real benefits to users.
Diffusion of Light
One of the most sensitive and complex measurements on protective eyewear is that of the diffusion of light through the lens. Diffusion must be tested for all eyewear certified to EN 166:2001. It occurs when light passing through a transparent ocular (lens) is scattered and spreads in all directions.

The most radical one has been the ATEX Directive, this directive refers to any equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres.
ATEX Portable Lighting
Changes in legislation and technology related to portable lighting for confined spaces and 'EX' hazardous areas. Confined spaces and 'EX' hazardous areas are locations where explosion hazards, caused by potentially explosive gas, vapour, mist or dust atmospheres, can be commonly found. Such atmospheres are present in many industries and sectors, including the petrochemical, marine, offshore and aviation industries, in the utilities and in fire-fighting activities; and are most likely to occur in areas where flammable materials are stored or used in manufacturing, and in enclosed or partially enclosed spaces, such as process vessels, storage tanks, culverts, sewers, tunnels and shafts.
