Researching Chemical Protection

Research into the detection and prevention of exposure to chemicals has a long history in Sweden. Carin Håkansta gives a brief overview of the policy context that enabled this type of OSH research to prosper, how policies have changed over time and how those changes affected the area. Furthermore, she describes how Swedish research on chemical exposures has developed through time. Finally, in order to give a flavour of research today, three examples of ongoing research projects funded by FAS in the area of chemical risks are presented.

Reach

The European REACH Regulation came into force on June 1, 2007, and affects not only all sectors of the wider chemical industry, but also sectors of industry where chemical products are used.

Footwear for Chemical Protection

SATRA’s Peter Doughty highlights some key requirements and latest developments for chemical protection footwear intended for supply into the EU.

Ensuring Chemical Protection - Minimising the risks chemical hazards can have on workers

The British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) is the leading trade body within the UK safety industry and an HSE-recognised competent authority. Its members include manufacturers, distributors, test houses, certification bodies, safety professionals and service providers. Here the BSIF looks at the issue of chemical protection and offers advice on how to ensure employees remain safe.

Chemical Safety

Emergency safety showers and eye/facewash units provide vital first aid in the event of an industrial accident where workers may be contaminated with potentially dangerous substances. The aim is to start treatment as quickly as possible and therefore reduce the impact of an injury until trained medical help arrives. To do this requires the right equipment, in the right place. Also, it must be easily accessible and maintained in good working order, ready for immediate action. For minor injuries, this first-aid may be the only treatment required but for more serious injuries, effective decontamination can mean the difference between life and death.

Hand in Glove

Chemicals coming into contact with the skin can cause diseases on the skin or elsewhere in the body due to skin absorption of chemicals. The hands are the most exposed and affected parts of the skin. Approximately 80 per cent of all work-related skin disease on the hands is irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. Skin absorption of chemicals can cause poisoning and several diseases such as cancer, nervous system disorders and kidney diseases. To protect workers from effects of skin exposure to hazardous chemicals, the UK industry uses thousands of pairs of chemical protective gloves each year, costing millions of pounds to purchase, store, use and dispose of.

Far REACHing Objectives

How do you objectively assess the risk of a chemical? Ever tried to compare safety data sheets on the same substance from different suppliers? What are the risk management measures you need when using a chemical in your factory? What should you do to minimise the environmental impact of a chemical when it leaves your site? Who really decides what constitutes an acceptable risk of using a chemical? Are chemical users across Europe playing on a level playing field and just where did those lists of banned chemicals come from?

Streamlining Regulations

Control of the use and disposal of chemicals. REACH is the EU Regulation on the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals which entered into force on 1 June 2007. It places duties on all manufacturers, importers and users of chemicals in the European Union, and is aimed at ensuring adequate control of risks to humans and the environment from the manufacture, use and disposal of chemicals.

Eliminate The Risks

Under the Health and Safety at Work Etc Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 employers have a legal duty to protect their employees (and anyone else affected) during their work activities.

Hazardous Materials Management

Any facility or product manager should already have noticed it. We are facing some fundamental regulatory changes that will change the way in which one can or has to handle hazardous materials.

Handling HazMat Emergencies

Planning for emergencies is one of the most critical elements of the emergency response effort. However, planning involves more than drafting a written document.
